Rising Damp
This type of damp is one that fills most homeowners with dread. You’ll be able to identify rising damp by tide marks up the wall, spanning 1 metre high, along with crumbling plaster, peeling paper and rotting skirting boards.
You should also check the nails that have been hammered into the skirting boards for signs of rust, as this is a classic sign that they have been exposed to excess moisture over a long period of time. The damp patches will be dark in colour and damp to the touch. If the area is dry, this is a typical sign of a previous damp problem that wasn’t adequately rectified.
Lateral Damp
The point of water penetration with lateral damp comes from cracks in exterior walls, leaking pipes, overflowing gutters or missing bathroom and roof tiles. This time of damp can appear anywhere along the wall, and can even develop on ceilings.
To identify lateral damp, look for dark patches on walls and ceilings, then check woodwork for signs of rot, mould growth and general damage.
Penetrating Damp
This type of damp originates from outside walls and can often be seen on the house’s exterior. The easiest way to identify penetrating damp is keeping an eye out for patches on outside walls that increase in size after a period of rainfall. Check the roof and all interior walls and ceilings for signs of damp.
