Damp is something you hope never to come across in your house, whether you’ve just bought it or owned the property for many years, if damp is left untreated, it can wreak havoc throughout your home. Problems it causes includes:
- Structural damages to your property
- Health implications for residents and visitors to your home
There are many causes of damp, often, it’s as a result of a poorly ventilated house, a leaking pipe that the homeowner wasn’t aware of, or a house that hasn’t been adequately heated for a prolonged period of time. Excess moisture can also be attributed to the development of damp in your home. This is most likely to occur during the colder months of the year.
It’s a common misconception that there is only one type of damp – this simply isn’t the case. There are a few different types which you should keep an eye out for, including:
Rising damp – this is the type of damp that fills most homeowners with fear. Tide marks and saltwater residue spanning up the wall at around 1 metre high is a typical sign of rising damp, along with crumbling wall plaster, peeling wallpaper and painted walls may feel like a thin paste. Nails in skirting boards can show signs of rust and the skirting boards themselves may be starting to rot. The affected areas will often be dark and damp to the touch, but if the area is dry, it could be a sign of a previous damp problem that wasn’t properly rectified.
Lateral damp – this bears the same hallmarks as rising damp, although the point of water penetration is often from an exterior wall, missing tiles, leaking pipes or overflowing gutters. Lateral damp can appear at any point on the wall and can be identified by looking for dark damp patches on walls and ceilings and checking all woodwork for signs of rot, mould growth and damage in general. Crumbling plaster is also a clear sign.
Penetrating damp – originating from outside walls, this type of damp can often be seen on the house’s exterior. Look for patches of damp that increase in size after a rain shower. It’s important to check exterior walls, the roof, interior walls and ceilings throughout your home for signs of damp.
